When Mama reached out to me with the idea of a simple white backdrop session to capture her two boys that are 16 months apart, I knew exactly where we needed to go. Black & Light Studio has amazing lighting thanks to a wall of windows and the perfect oversized backdrop and it created an amazing space for this minimal portraits session.
After having shot literally 100s of sessions, I feel like I can throw out so many tops for what you should and shouldn’t do. But after all of that time, there are two that stick out to me that I hope Mama’s will take into consideration to help make a family photo session a little less stressful.
My biggest tip for a minimal studio session is to keep the outfit simple. With the simple white backdrop, your family will pop no matter what you wear. And keeping the outfits simple will make preparing for family portraits a little bit easier.
Now as a mom myself, I know this is easier said than done. But my favorite moments in a session are when the kids get to ‘just be’. Whether they’re playing with their favorite toy, running in the background of another shot or maybe just need a moment before jumping back into photos – I promise we’ll get some good ones! When you try to control less, their personalities shine more and always make for the best photos.
Ready to book your minimal indoor studio session? Let’s start planning! I can’t wait to get more of these on the calendar, especially with the crazy Texas heat!

Love this, did you use any LED lighting next to the natural light, and what lens have you shot with?
