I know it probably seems like everyone is a photographer. You may feel like you will never build a profitable business because the market is saturated with photographers in your area. How will you ever gain more clients when they seem to be going with the less expensive, all inclusive options? It’s frustrating and it can feel overwhelming. But here’s the thing, the market is not over-saturated. There is room for you in the photography industry. You have value and you have worth. You have something to bring to your community that no one else has. So, what is the key to standing out in a saturated photography market? PICK A NICHE.
Did that make you panic a little? Did you roll your eyes at me and think “but I love all types of photography, I can’t pick just ONE.” Did your mind go straight to the dollar signs, “how can I make money with only one genre?”
STOP.
Picking a niche DOES NOT mean:
Nope, quite the opposite will happen. What really happens when you pick a niche:
Have you heard the saying… “when you are speaking to everyone, you are speaking to no one.” It’s true.
You are probably already leaning towards a niche without even realizing it. What type of photo sessions light your fire? Make a list of the sessions that you love and then make a list of the sessions you don’t enjoy. You’ll likely start seeing a pattern. Do you love families and weddings? You can absolutely niche in both. It’s a seamless transition to capture the start of a couples journey and continue to capture them as their family grows. Do you love senior session and branding sessions? You can easily position yourself as the expert in individual portraits. What about couples sessions and boudoir photography? You can be the LOOOOOVE expert.
Does picking a niche mean you can’t photograph anything outside of that genre? ABSOLUTELY NOT. I would recommend minimizing the amount that you share about your non-specialty photos.
You picked your niche, now what? How do you let people know? Your social media and website should reflect your specialties.
My long term goal is for lifestyle newborn sessions to be the majority of my income, with family sessions filling in the gaps. In May of 2021 I decided to post mostly newborn photos on Instagram for the entire month. About 80% of my posts related to newborn sessions in some way. In July of 2021 I had 7 newborn inquires over the course or 48 hours. All 7 of those moms booked a newborn session with me.
