You’ve probably seen those trendy “inside the box” photos floating around social media for a bit. I tried my hand at them in April of 2020 (you remember, when we were all stuck at home?) The first time I did it, I just used my iPhone, handheld, with an Amazon box. It was adorable and still one of my favorite photos of my kids. Then, I got a bit fancier (and the cardboard box got WAAAAY bigger) when I did a tutorial on Instagram for my friends stuck at home too. That time I used a tripod.
About a year later, one of my long time clients asked me to do the cutest Toy Story birthday photos in a cardboard box. Needless to say, I got a bit of a good reputation for these cute little box photos.
I had a feeling these photos would be a huge hit, so I had a large white box made… and here is where the magic truly begins. When people found out I was doing these “Box 2 School” minis, it spread like wild fire. So far, I’ve done about 15 sessions in the last week. Do you want to get in on this action?
A few notes:
- My original box was 4 ft tall x 4 ft wide x 2 ft deep. Parents would frequently want to join in the photo fun but it was a bit cramped for them. Eventually I had a new box made with the dimensions 4ft tall x 4ft wide x 3 ft deep. If I had more space I would have done 4ft deep.
- The goal is to line your camera and the box up as close to perfect as you can, with the center point of the camera aimed at the center of your box.
- Color correct the images before you start to work on them in Photoshop.
- Your best friends will be the transform & distort tools in Photoshop.
- You will want the corners of the box to line up with the corners of the canvas.
- The color of my grid generally matches my boxes. You can fill the frame by color selecting and filling to match your colors more accurately.
- Don’t make yourself crazy, perfection is near impossible.

Hi, I really enjoyed your video and the result of your inbox photoshoot. What resolution did you use to take each individual picture and what was the resolution of the final picture with all of the boxes put together? My concern is the quality of the individual pictures being compromised ones they are all pieced together. What was the exact process on that? Thank you in advance for your time and response.
