We didn’t get many professional photos taken when I was a kid. Aside from the annual school portrait, occasional JCPenney Christmas photo, and heaven forbid… GLAMOUR SHOTS. I hear my clients repeat the same sentiment back to me. As parents, we aim to make our children’s lives just a little bit better than ours. As a result, our generation has become obsessed with documenting for the sake of memory keeping. We want to make sure we are recording the full story of our children’s lives.
We share our stories and remember those moments through photos. They are passed on through present and future generations. How do we capture the true essence of who our family is at a particular moment?
Everybody loves a perfectly curated photo. But I find those photos rarely tell the full story of your family. True, those photos show us the facts. Reminds us what Jr’s smile looked like at age 5. How he barely reached our elbow even on tippy toes.
Have you ever tried to make your child say cheese and smile at the camera? It’s rarely what we consider their “real smile.” Often times the smile resembles more of a forced grimace.
As a photographer, I love to witness your emotions, your in-between moments, that reveal the details, the “isms” of your family. Embrace the imperfect moments. Find the joy. These are the moments the true emotions are evoked. You’ll remember the unspoken, unseen. The parts you can only feel.
I like to think of the photographer as the director of your story. We set the location, the scene, the script. It’s up to you as the actors to make the characters come to life. To make the image have feeling and depth.
My job is to capture your best moments to tell your unique story. On my best days, I can capture real, true emotion, a memorable moment, and amplify the feelings during a particular season of your life.
During this particular session, little sister had fallen asleep in the car and wasn’t particularly happy. You’ll catch a moment where mama is soothing her when she is upset. On the side, dad and big sister are having their own time together – telling each other secrets.
As the session goes on you can see the joy and love that unfolds between the family. It’s these imperfect shots that I want to bottle up for you to keep forever.
