You’re scrolling through Pinterest or Instagram and you see photo after photos of perfectly posed adorable children and you think… “yeah, no way would my child ever cooperate like that.” Usually, photos are a source of stress for mom, dad, and the kids, right? Do you want to know the secret to getting your child to behave for photos?

Did you just roll your eyes at me? Okay, yeah, so the outfit planning can be a bit of a pain and getting dad on board is tedious (pack a beer ladies, I don’t mind). But the actual session should be FUN.
Here’s the secret to getting your child to behave for photos… are you ready?
CHILL. Yeah, I said it.
Trust me, I have photographed hundreds upon hundreds of families. Some are shy, some are wild, some are goofy, some are reserved. But they are all precious and adorable. Do you know who “ruins” more images than a silly wild toddler? Mom and dad trying to tell their kids to look at the camera or to stop picking up rocks, etc. You hired ME for a reason, right? I’m not one to brag, but I’m like REALLY GOOD at what I do. I’m not afraid to pretend to toot, dish out tickles, and run around playing. I can get a sweet photo out of ANY kid. Mama, you just have to let go of control and let whatever happens, happens.
Here are a few tips to make your session go smoothly:
- Plan nap time accordingly. Spring and Summer sessions tend to be a bit later due to the sunset. If you can, push back that nap time a little bit.
- Snacks and water are golden. Bring some smarties, goldfish, gummies, puffs (not messy snacks), as well as water to keep the cranky away. Sometimes the mid-session munchies hit and it’s best to feed the little monsters rather than force them to keep going.
- Bring photo-friendly props or toys. You can keep these hidden until we need to bring out the arsenal. Sometimes having something fun to hold is just what they need to brighten up.
- For the really little ones, bring their favorite toy that makes noises or lights up so I can grab their attention easily.
- I’m not above bribes, in fact, I usually keep suckers in my camera bag and will hand them out after the session (mom and dad approved of course). You can bribe with anything your heart desires.
- Have fun! Come ready to play and laugh and be silly.
