As an experienced newborn photographer with three growing children of my own, I’m all about creating a newborn photography experience that puts everyone at ease, Mama included. I love capturing your true connection and the absolute awe that you feel when snuggling your new baby, whether you choose to have your session in your home, in a studio, or in the hospital during your baby’s first hours and days earthside.
But how do you know which session style is right for you and your family? Let me share a few tips to help you feel confident in choosing a Hospital Newborn session (also known as a Fresh 48) or a Lifestyle Newborn session to welcome your baby into the world.
Your baby’s earliest moments in the outside world typically take place at a birthing center or a hospital, and if you love the idea of capturing your family’s first moments together, a Fresh 48 hospital session is for you.
Fresh 48 images are often unscripted and capture more natural moments between you and your newest little one, rather than posed shots. As you and your partner (and any older children) bond with the baby, I focus on capturing each moment as it unfolds.
Some families also enjoy documenting a collection of baby’s first experiences in the hospital, from nursing or feeding to baby’s first bath. These sessions also don’t require detailed planning like outfit selection, styling, or props; the focus is on the baby!
There’s likely no place that feels more warm or safe than home, and that’s the feeling that a lifestyle or in-home newborn session aims to capture. Both children and adults often feel most comfortable at home in a familiar and personal environment, which is why these sessions are some of my favorites to recommend for families who have older siblings or beloved pets at home.
Many families are hesitant to schedule a photography session at home because they think their home has to be spotless (spoiler alert: it doesn’t!) and neutral in color in order to photograph beautifully. The best part of a lifestyle newborn session is that if you aren’t crazy about an in-home session, we can achieve a similar vibe in a studio setting with furniture set-ups.
If your family wants both a Fresh 48 and a lifestyle newborn session, I’m your girl!
In this case, I love to schedule your newborn photography session a bit later (when the baby is around one month of age) to showcase how your little one has grown since their Fresh 48 session.
